Splatoon 3 continues to splash ink on all manner of records, especially in Japan where the IP is huge. And it just passed another – with the release of Japan’s monthly report for September 2022, Splatoon 3 is now confirmed to be Japan’s top-selling video game of 2022.
Report data was shared by Game Data Library on Twitter, and he reveals that Nintendo’s third ink-based shooter sold just over 2.9 million retail units in the month of September alone. This means that in just one month, it surpassed 2.295 million retail units of Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
It’s worth pointing out that this is based on retail units only, but if we were to include digital sales as well (from what we currently know thanks to Nintendo revealing some sales numbers when Splatoon 3 launched), that means the game has sold over 4 million units already (until October 2).
Were not surprised, shall we say, more like quirky. We know how popular Splatoon is in Japan, but seeing such huge numbers in such a short time is pretty amazing. It has not yet been dethroned from first place in Japan!
When Splatoon 3 launched on September 9, it became the best-selling Switch game in Japan. already during its opening weekend, selling nearly 2 million physical copies in those first few days.
There’s really only one potential contender to take the crown for Japan’s top-selling video game in 2022 – Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. The ninth generation of Pokémon games will launch on November 18, so they’ll have six weeks to try and take the ink-splattered crown of Splatoon. It could be a close race.
