It has now been 3 years since PlatinumGames released the Astral Chain hack and slash exclusively on the Nintendo Switch. When the game hit the scene in August 2019, we praised it for its stunning graphics, presentation, varied gameplay, and rewarding combat.
If you haven’t already played it, we strongly recommend that you check it out. It seems Platinum hasn’t forgotten about it either. In a post on Twitter yesterday, director Takahisa Taura congratulated the game on its third year, thanked fans for their continued support, and announced a special giveaway for the Collector’s Edition:
Of course, while fans appreciate Platinum taking the time to mark the anniversary, it again led to a conversation about the future of IP – many were hoping to see some sort of sequel.
Yesterday in a sales update it was revealed how Astral Chain has sold around 1.28 million units since launch, which includes around +70,000 units since December 2020. Platinum also mentioned previously how the game sold “above expectations”.
PlatinumGames hasn’t mentioned anything about Astral Chain’s future on the Switch, but the next game it will bring to Nintendo’s hybrid system is NieR: Automata The End of YoRHa Edition. Takahisa Taura was also a designer on this project.
